In the ring, he is called AK-47, but behind the nickname stands 28-year-old Croatian kickboxer Andrej Kedves – WAKO World Champion from 2023 and two-time European Champion in K1 style. With strong technique, a steel mindset, and an aggressive style, he has already made a name for himself that every serious fighter in the -70 kg category must reckon with.
On May 17th in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, he will step into the ring at SENSHI 26 GLADIATORS, where Kedves will face Bulgarian champion Dragomir Petrov in an intense fight for the SENSHI European title in the -70 kg category under KWU FULL CONTACT rules. The bout promises not only an exciting spectacle but also a true clash of personalities – both fighters are police officers in their respective countries. This fact adds even greater matter and respect to their professional preparation and discipline. The Croatian will be the third challenger for Petrov’s title, which he has successfully defended twice.
Ahead of the important match at the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Andrej Kedves took time to speak with the team at GONG.bg for an exclusive interview, where he shared more about his fighting career, inspiration, and motivation.
What inspired you to become a fighter?
Since I was a child, I was drawn to martial arts. I just felt it – I wanted to try it and believed that I could become a fighter. I haven’t looked back since.
What is your most outstanding achievement so far in combat sports?
Without a doubt, it’s winning 1st place at the WAKO World Championship in 2023. That was the moment when I felt that all my efforts were worthwhile and were being rewarded.
What is the most memorable fight in your career and why?
It’s hard to choose just one, but my victory over Atanas Bozhilov at SENSHI 9 was very special — he’s an experienced and amazing fighter, and winning against him meant a lot to me. I’ve fought many other well-known opponents as well.
Who would you consider your toughest opponent?
I would say it was Daniel Puertas. We fought in 2017 when I was still young and less experienced. It was a brutal five-round fight from which I learned a lot.
What can the fans expect from you at SENSHI 26, and do you have a strategy for the upcoming fight?
Expect an attractive, aggressive, and dynamic match. I will give everything from the first to the last second.
My goal in the fight will be to impose my pace from the very beginning. I love controlling the rhythm of the fight.
What gives you the strength to handle the pressure of a big stage?
I love the crowd and the pressure. It’s during such moments that I show my best in the ring.
What do you do outside the ring?
I love to travel, spend time with my family and friends, listen to music, and read psychological books. As a police officer, I also represent the Ministry of the Interior of Croatia.
How do you stay motivated, even during challenging times?
I believe that difficulties are part of the process. It’s important to have a goal and to follow it. That gives me strength.
What advice would you give to young fighters?
Be patient and disciplined, and give everything you’ve got. If you dream genuinely, you must work truly.
What message do you have for your opponent?
Let’s both prepare well. I expect a high-level fight at SENSHI 26 GLADIATORS, full of respect and an actual battle. I am coming ready and motivated.
