In training sessionс, Shihan Francisco Filho emphasized the importance of mastering strikes with both hands and feet. However, what sets his teachings apart is the focus on inner strength. “Every fighter throws punches and kicks, but it’s crucial to understand how they do it, what they’re thinking, and why they perform the techniques in a particular way,” Filho explained. He encourages young fighters to reflect on these questions, stressing that martial arts are not just about external power but mastering internal strength.
Filho’s training always begins with a thorough warm-up, which, as he clarified, is not only due to the weather but is a core principle. “Some fighters think they only progress during sparring, but everything you do in the dojo contributes to your development. The moment you think you’ve reached your limit is when the true battle with yourself begins.”
In recent years, many MMA fighters, kickboxers, and practitioners from other major organizations have returned to Kyokushin for their foundational training. Filho believes Kyokushin should be at the core of every fighter’s preparation: “Kyokushin helps you harness your inner strength. Without it, even if you’re strong on the outside, you’ll face problems.”
When asked about the essence of martial arts, Filho agreed that progress starts from within: “That’s why I push them to their limits. Once they understand themselves and harness their inner strength, everything else becomes easier.”
Filho also reflected on his motivation for starting martial arts over 40 years ago, inspired by movie heroes, only to later realize the real power of martial arts comes from mastering inner strength, not cinematic fantasy.
Now a renowned Kyokushin legends, Filho discussed the transition from competing to coaching. “The decision to stop fighting wasn’t easy. After I retired in 2001, I returned in 2003. It’s hard to leave. But I saw that there’s much I could pass on to the next generation of fighters who are passionate and capable of developing further.”
