Andy Souwer – two-time K-1 World MAX champion, part of the elite SENSHI instructor team, and a member of the KWU SENSHI Board of Directors – joined Grant Waterman for an exclusive video interview in which the legend speaks openly about his journey in kickboxing, the inner battles outside the ring, and his new mission after the end of his active career.
Souwer admits that despite achieving extraordinary success in the sport, he has never seen himself as a star. Behind the shine of the titles lie “dark” periods – years marked by struggles with alcohol, gambling, aggression, and hooliganism. It is precisely these personal trials that now motivate him to work with people fighting to reintegrate into society, including former prisoners. Andy emphasizes that he does not train them only physically – for him, mental work is just as important, and his own life story is the strongest tool he has to show that change is possible.
After ending his professional career at the age of 40, Souwer confesses that he fell into a crisis and did not know which direction to take. Life after the ring proved difficult and even dangerous, until advice from close friends guided him toward a new path. This led to the idea of opening his own gym – something he had avoided for a long time, because as a competitor he only wanted to be the best. Gradually, however, he discovered a new sense of purpose: passing on his knowledge, experience, and life lessons to the next generations.
His beginning in martial arts was also no coincidence. Andy shares that he started training because of complicated relations with his father, and in his early years he shared the gym with Albert Kraus, who was already an established star. Those formative years shaped his character and laid the foundation for his future legendary battles in K-1 World MAX.
How does Andy see the future of SENSHI? What are his expectations for the first-ever Grand Prix tournament in the -75 kg division at SENSHI 30 – a format he believes will elevate both the organization and the fighters to an even higher level? The stories of battling inner demons, epic clashes in K-1 World MAX, and the journey from “The Destroyer” in the ring to a mentor outside of it come alive in the full video interview.
